I have read a couple of books by Mia Sheridan and I have to say I quite like them. Why? Because I never see the ending coming which makes reading her books all the more puzzling.
The lost ones by Mia Sheridan will be released in October so, you’ll have to wait for some time but it will be worth it.

In this book we are kind of traveling from the present to the past between chapters and you might think halfway that you’ve figured it all out… You’re wrong.
Duke is just shy of 8 years and has been living in a trailer in the woods with his dad since he can remember. He has known live in solitude, has been left to his own devices for days at a time since his dad has to work trucking. When his dad is home, he doesn’t leave Duke’s sight. When Duke wakes with a start and looks outside and sees his father wandering about in the woods carrying something, he knows something isn’t right and Duke decides to follow. When he sees what his dad is carrying, the words his dad told him often come back to the front. “There is a darkness inside of me, Duke, it runs in my blood like poison.” When Duke sees the girl being placed in a mine shaft and his dad wandering off after locking up, he goes to investigate.
When Duke placed not one but two girls somewhere save, he goes to a place he is sure has a phone to phone it in to the police. His father goes to jail for what he did, never telling Duke why he did it in the first place. One of the girls, Winsome gets adopted by the Mayor of Broken Rock called Twyla Fair and the other one Junie, went to live in a home for fosters; same as Duke but not at the same home.
Present day and duke has been behind bars for about 8 years for the murder of Junie but he can’t remember doing anything to his friend, he can’t even remember that day. Slowly memories are reservicing in his dreams. When a friend from way back comes to visit him in prison and tells him his father is going to be released due to a technicality, Duke starts to panic. His dad has been trying to contact Winsome ever since he went to prison. Duke thinks his dad will be wanting to finish the job so the only thing he can think of is a good old fashioned prison break.
Winsome knew, when she heard of Duke escaping prison that he would be coming back to town and she knew just the place where he would hide out since it was there secret place. Winsome knows he didn’t do what they accuse him of so together they are looking for answers and those answers don’t want to be found. Digging means danger but they won’t ever give up until the truth is out and that truth is nothing they ever expected.
The past will make you understand somewhat about the upbringing Dukes dad had and what happened in the years he lived home. But that won’t justify anything.
I’m giving this a ⭐⭐⭐,5 star.
