I had the opportunity to ARC read the newest book by Helen Phifer, this time it isn’t Morgan Brookes but it’s a second novel about the Salem witches taking us back to the English women and their next adventure.

The book of unwritten stories is a cozy novel in which we learn about what the English sisters have been through in their first lifetime in the 1600s with Lucine being the main character in that time and how she found love even though it was frowned upon back then. Love can only come forth in marriage wandering around with a male can have consequences but consequences by damned they thought for their love was too big to ignore.

John’s first wife died in childbirth and while the child survived, fathers weren’t supposed to look after their children in that time a child would go to a childminder, hire a nanny or in this case, went to his sister to live with while John travelled the word to do his job. With Salem people as closed minded as they are John would become unwelcome within weeks, leaving Lucine behind, heartbroken and with child.

PRESENT

Dora has finally accepted her fate and has tied up some loose ends back in London, Giving Katie her flowershop and her other friend doesn’t have to pay rent for their apartment anymore. Dora will live in Salem and will learn about being a witch and the rules that go with it. Not soon after Lenny got back from sorting her own affairs in London, she gets the feeling that something is not right in Salem, something Dark has been unleashed.

Hades has been flying off to God knows where, he has been following a woman because of a connection they have. The girl had been given a book, a book with dark magic spells and even though the girl was skeptical at first after trying the first spell and it having succeeded does she get interested in this book. Interested in suck a way that her thoughts go dark and she becomes a mean person. While Hades trying to persuade Dora to follow him and meet Morana, Dora soon discovers that this woman doesn’t want help. She’s so mean that Dora starts to walk away even with Hades telling her to stay because of trouble.

Lenny feels the darkness had descended but can’t pinpoint what it must be. Dora is set out to look for the lost bookstore to see if after she found in weeks ago, she properly cloaked it again and if there are books taken from inside. Shock goes through her, finding the bookstore uncloaked and while going inside she sees most books are present but one is gone, she just doesn’t know which one.

The sisters soon come to believe it’s the book of black magic that has gone missing and that that book is the cause of the darkness descending. That book is dangerous in the wrong hands but also in the hands of someone as unexperienced as Morana is. The first spell to take away the fuss the neighbor makes daily, but that resulted in her neighbor being struck by a car. Morana’s lightness makes place for darkness, dark thoughts of explaining things away. She deserved it because the neighbor in question was a mean woman.

When the book of black magic has been taken by someone that wants to hurt the English Family a lot happens; Morana joins the English Family and a stand off takes place. Morana gets stabbed, Hades almost dies…
