Well, to cage a god by Elizabeth May was a DNF – The story did not grip my attention after about 25% so it was time to pick a new book. I had waited on the newest Jeneva Rose release with the horror stories called Sometimes I scare myself and decided to buy the ebook and start that one.

This book had three short horror stories and are pretty good. It took me a day to read all of it with plenty of breaks to do random things. I’ll put three small reviews below, to each story their own.

Never kill the medium;

Erica has turned 30 and to celebrate she invited her closest friends to a dinner party. Erica is a perfectionist and has recently noticed small changes in her husband’s behavior but that confrontation has to wait since she wants this night to be perfect. When everyone arrived and dinner has been served a knock on the door surprises everyone because Erica isn’t expecting someone. Standing in front of her is a medium and he has been hired to do a reading. Everyone in her closest circle knew Erica has been feeling guilty over her sister’s death and hasn’t been able to put it to rest.

With the medium having set up and everyone moving to the living room and lending him a personal item, the reading starts; starting with Beckie. Once the medium started it’s like someone has taken over, saying one thing over and over again ‘Bad girl Beckie’ telling them Erica’s husband has been having an affair with Beckie. With that reading cut short, it’s time for Erica – the only one she wants to come in contact with is her sister and it seemed to have worked. When it’s Chris’ turn everything changed. The atmosphere in the room becomes heavy, loaded even. Something from the other side seems to have been released, scaring and murdering people but, scaring and murdering who?

The nightmare house;

The Dalton’s are moving in to their new house in a small town called Tillington that has a population off 256 people. Well, plus four now if you count the Dalton’s. The house was sold for such a good price, a bargain actually if you count all the acres of land that come with it. With the husband at work and the daughter in school, Kristin has all the time in the world to slowly unpack and make the house feel like a home checking on their 12-week-old baby Henry often enough. After her first day of school Hailey walks home from the bus stop in town, feeling someone following her and choosing there and then to get the upper hand, telling the person to stop stalking her. That’s when she first meets Eddie.

There are these little incidents around the house that only seem to happen to Kristin, they consume her so much that the rest of the family thinks she is having postnatal depression or a mental breakdown. Wanting to take some weight off of Kristin’s shoulders the husband, daughter and baby are planning to go to their welcome party without her and that was fine by Kristin because with no one at home, she could burn this f*cking house down so her family would make it out alive and start over somewhere new. But, did she? Was she having a mental breakdown or did those things really happen? Is this town cursed?

All curses are final;

It wasn’t Blair’s brightest idea to break up with her boyfriend Jake when they were about to depart on one of their last weekend’s together with their friend group. After a long drive it was time for a gas and snack break they decide to stop at the next roadside shop they see which is some oddity shop that has a creepy vibe. There is a lady behind the counter and a sign behind here that says ‘All items cursed, Curse lifted at time of sale’. Which was kind of weird. Back in the car Blair rummages through her bag and feels something that didn’t belong there, when she pulls it out and sees it’s a pen she asks the rest of her friends who put it there and to go back so she can at least pay for it. Without a whodunnit and laughter over wanting to go back because of a pen, she drops the subject.

While at their cabin, the owner Bill checks in and tells them to stay put because there is a nasty storm coming, don’t go wandering outside and keep the fire going at all times. Which sounded kind of weird; At 3 Blair wakes and hears the front door close, when she goes exploring, she sees no evidence of someone having left. She only sees Jake at the kitchen table, looking very weird. Awake, but not awake. The next day the storm is at full blast and one of the friends has gone missing. But, they won’t be the only one – as the story progresses everything gets much much worse.

I’m giving this book a ⭐⭐⭐⭐.5 star rating.
