A while back I came across an author duo on TikTok and became intrigued by a series that they wrote together. Not wanting to know too much about the books but the essence and sort of humor that was promised in the books being; the Winchester brothers’ charisma and banter. If you don’t know who the Winchester brothers are, they are the leads in a TV series called Supernatural.

I’ve never seen the serie but I did see a lot of shorts and loved them and it’s definitely on my list to watch. Okay, back to this book series and my opinion about it. The first book in the trilogy is called ‘Shot in the Dark’ and that’s also the name of the series and was written by Mary Dublin and Anne Kendsley.

The beginning was fun but after the 50% mark it kind of dragged and at the 75% mark I contemplated DNFing or soldiering on, I choose the last but it didn’t really get better. The last 8% was cool but not worth the read, I think.

The FMC in this story is called Sylvia and is a fairy in a place called Elysia, a fairy community that has closed their doors on other fairies but also didn’t want their own to exit this community. Sylvia has secretly gone to Dottage Mansion where a ghost resides called Alice, never been across a human before and having learned from a young age that humans are dangerous as are so called hunters. One night she hears voices downstairs, when she goes down and comes close to being caught by humans – something feels off though. The man and woman talk about someone hunted them and that they had to lay low.

Sneaking back in the community never has been a problem, always taking some tiny jewelry as keepsake to give to her sister. Live resumes normally but that itch to go beyond the boundary of the village is taking over again. The fairies in Elysia are content on living behind the borders and go about live as they are used to, but not Sylvia. She told her fling where she wanted to go and invited him to go with only to be met by astonishment and rejection. She leaves anyway, but that trip will cost her.

Not long after arriving at Dottage does she come across humans again, but this time she gets caught and taken by hunters. Fairies learn from a young age that hunters are bloodthirsty and will tear anything and everything apart but she’ll soon learn it’s not like that and a bond grows. The hunters are looking into the disappearances of humans nearby but don’t know what they are hunting yet, they suspect a werewolf which means time is off the essence. Sylvia can sense when something abnormal happened within a place or when something abnormal is in a place which makes her an asset.

I’m only giving this book ⭐⭐⭐ stars and won’t be reading the next books.
