My book bestie and I tried this new tiktok trend but without filming, mind you. Not everyone likes to be on camera but, we had a lovely lunch where we each put three books in the Spin the Wheel app. Six books in total and the last remaining would be the one, we would pick up and read. The remaining book was also some kind of booktok hit and was the book Amber picked out as one of her three choices.

The book that was chosen was none other than of blades and wings by Eliza Raine and is a fantasy novel about different kinds of Fae being chosen to become a Valkyrie.

The FMC in this story is called Maddy and is a princess of the Ice Court only no one knows she exists; Why you might ask? Ever since Maddy was young she had fainting spells and the doctors told her parents that one of those spells could mean her demise. Her parents quickly lost interest in her, but she had her sister to learn her things and show her what’s what. Never being allowed out of the castle, never allowed to roam around inside as well. With her sister Freydis having her farewell party because she was chosen to become a Valkyrie; Maddy being allowed to attend as Freydis’ handmaiden.

Having thought she still had until morning it was surprising that the party was actually crashed by the Valkyrie. But when the Valkyrie told them they came for the Verglas’ princess and it wasn’t Freydis; people began to murmur, when the finger of one of the Valkyrie landed on Maddy the King and Queen were outraged. She was chosen by Odin so there was no getting around to it. No mistakes were made when they pointed to Maddy; the secret princess with the fainting spells and almost no magic. Weak and chubby Maddy.

Once the last rooks arrived at Yggdrasil, Maddy included it soon became clear that Maddy would be singled out and would be the laughing stock among the rooks that were chosen. Maddy, in her sparkling party dress and no suitable attire for training. She’ll learn that kindness gets you killed and being weak isn’t an option. Running to build stamina and weights to gain muscle but her aversion to hit someone is so big that she gets bullied and beaten by people who are hoping to see her fail.

One Valkyrie though, a fire fae that doesn’t have wings and has a very bad aura; when he locks eyes with you your instinct tells you to run, get the hell out. But this man is the one that keeps backing her up, not because he likes Maddy but because he needs something. After two decades of not finding the secret vault and with Maddy he finds it within the first week; His protection means that people seem to back off. But still, classes are tough and finding a sparring partner that’s willing to let you learn instead of maiming you is hard to find.

This book was good, it wasn’t that long but it wasn’t the best book I’ve read either. I am continuing this series though!
