I have read a lot of books by Marie Lu and enjoyed almost all of them, there was one I tried this year that was a DNF for me but that doesn’t put me of in reading other new books she has written.

I request the most beautiful books through Netgalley to hopefully be granted to ARC read and lo and behold, a new book written by Marie Lu; I couldn’t resist.

This new book by Marie Lu is called Mortal Things and will be released at the end of this month and is a perfect book to let your teens read.

In this story we follow Rose and is a harbinger for the god of death called Raven, living among the mortals and collecting souls that get selected to move on. There are more gods with their own set of harbingers; one of them is Etienne, Regent for the god of lies. Every god has a Regent and that person is to take over for the god once it dies, God of Death’s Regent is called Terran and has trained Rose and taught her about all that she has to do.

When Rose is out on a job to find a person that has been evading death for a few years with the help of the god of lies, she wasn’t expecting Etienne to be around because him being here is making her job a lot harder. With him here she just has to be the first to her mark and take his soul so it can go into the eternal tree. After she did her job, Etienne told her he only needed a secret. There has been talk about Wraiths rooming the mortal world which shouldn’t be possible. Yes, you should be able to see them as Harbingers but they shouldn’t be able to interact with mortal things and yet, rumor says they did.

When word comes out that God of Death’s Regent Terran has been attacked and murdered by these Wraith creatures and that there will be an event at his home to select a new Regent, everyone needs to attend. When Rose arrives, she learns that Raven is planning on promoting her into the position even if she has been a harbinger the shortest. When Etienne finds her, they start talking about how he became a Regent and that if a god objects, you have to fulfil three tasks and your opponent would be the regent of the God that denied you. Rose thinks that this will be smooth sailing because none of the gods seem to be having an issue; until the God of Lies, Thorn denies the request.

In the following weeks Rose needs to beat Etienne in three tasks and they will be hard because Etienne is a master of Illusion and can make you believe in about anything. She will learn a lot of new things about the world she navigates in; a lot about balance and a God’s will but also, it’s betrayal. One of these gods has done something to make the mortal world accessible for Wraiths, for them to wreak havoc and it seems they are only attacking Harbingers and Regents.

How Rosie became a Harbinger? Simple; She gave up her live to save her best friend. Why? She was living in foster care and only had Laine. Laine for badly attacked when they were going somewhere and without hesitation, she begged to take her place instead, let her friend live – That’s when the God of Death offered her to become a Harbinger.

This book is a ⭐⭐⭐⭐ star read, I like it.
