And just like that, the 10th book in my 10 before the end challenge is done! The 10th book in this challenge was none other than ‘With a Vengeance’ by Riley Sager. I know I know, the opinions on this book were all over the place. There are authors where I’ll be wanting to read their books even if the reviews are bad or extremely mixed, because what might not be your cup of tea; could definitely be mine.
So, with a vengeance is the latest book by Riley Sager and if believing the reviews should be to much of a Poirot / Agatha Christie novel; I can’t be the judge of that since I haven’t read a single book by Agatha. What I can tell you is that I actually enjoyed reading this book, my thoughts on who the killer was shifted so much during this book, in the end I was half right!

There are six people that destroyed the lives of many but got away with it, well not anymore! When Anna finds out the truth about how her father has been framed, there’s only one thing she can think about and that is justice. With Seamus, someone who has been wronged in the same events she forms a plan; Six invitations will be sent to board the train to Chicago which is a 13-hour journey. The train her father owned for many years; with the invitation is a written note with somewhat of a threat to make sure all the invited parties show.
All her money is set into this plan, buying of all the staff members – all train tickets bought so there will be no passengers on this train but the invited. When it’s time for people to start boarding the train, Anna confines herself to her quarters so no one will know it’s her that set all of this in motion, she’ll show herself when the time is right. Once everyone is on board, staff quietly exit and the train starts the journey to Chicago.
Seamus leads Anna to the coach where she invited all her guests, pure hatred floods her veins for the people in that room. Pure hatred for their part in destroying her family among other people that died in that same event 12 years ago. She wants to look each one in the eye and tell them that their peaceful and luxury lives are over, proof has been uncovered on their part in that tragic accident, the one her father took the fall for.
‘When this train arrives in Chicago the FBI will be waiting for each and every one of you’ – Not a single one of the people involved believes Anna, but they don’t want to sit out this train ride either. After finding out they are all stuck, the train won’t be making any stops along the way, do their true colors come to light.
Within the 13-hour journey multiple people will be murdered. Some rise from the dead and some things you won’t see coming. There are things within this book that are highly unlikely for someone to do, like walking on the roof of a fast-moving train in a blizzard… But all in all this book kept me wondering and switching between who the killer is.
I liked it! It’s a ⭐⭐⭐⭐ star read for me.
