Another book by Helen Phifer in the Morgan Brookes series which makes this book the 19^th one. How does she come up with all these horrible events? The imagination of this woman is dark yet overflowing because she drops a lot of books in one year and all of them will have you wondering.

Morgan has the afternoon of, going on a long overdue visit to her best friend Theo but once she’s there the visit is cut short with a phone call from Ben. With the team either on another task and DI Marc doing another disappearing act the only one left to call is Morgan and he wouldn’t do it if it wasn’t necessary; a murder has taken place and a gruesome one at that, a woman was found lying in her kitchen by the cleaner in nothing more than her underwear, wearing no make-up except a very bright red lipstick. Once everything is bagged and tagged and photographed Morgan finds a note underneath the victim’s pillow stating that there will be a next one.

A mother is losing it because she hasn’t been able to get in touch with her daughter Ash. Frantic because her key doesn’t seem to open the front door to her daughter’s flat a neighbor offers to go round back and try to open the door that way only when he does, does he tell the mother not to go in there and to call the police. Her daughter Ash has been murdered and has been dead for approximately a couple of days if the green skin is any indicator. Only wearing her underwear, no makeup except that weird bright red lipstick, linking these deaths with each other. Morgan finds another note under the pillow in Ash’ house marking Morgan as a target but also telling her that he has another victim lined up.

A woman named Lisa is at the station because a man has been hanging around her flat in the evenings and he really seems out of place, giving her the creeps. Marc has been in a hurry but with Lisa wanting to speak to someone other then a lowly desk sergeant she asks Marc for a minute to hear her out. Marc tells her that in official capacity they can’t do anything because the man is standing on a public street and isn’t harassing someone, he does get her address and promised to let someone look into it and that if the man comes back or if she feels unsafe to dial 999.

This investigation has the team running in circles, with the crime rate in Rydall falls through the roof if you look at murders you would expect a full team of investigators. With this case they learn how understaffed they actually are having to lent people from other districts to help them with door to door and other inquires. The team has had a difficult few years with Marc being their boss and with him being someone you can’t really depend on as of this case. When another DI comes over from another district to lend a hand, they get a taste of what a DI should be, trusting her team this DI is smooth sailing, not stepping on toes or cutting corners but invested and not afraid to get her hands dirty. Will this DI be a permanent fixture in the future?

Morgan wouldn’t be Morgan if she wasn’t targeted by the perp in the book.

I absolutely love how effortless these stories seem apart from the crimes and horrible events happening these books all seem cozy.
